Animal RED/Teroar New animal fighting game in the works

Hi, I just wanted to stop by and show off a project I've been working for the last 6 months. Its gonna be a fighter with an all animal cast of characters. All I can tell you so far is it's gonna be a 6 button fighter and it's non airdash/anime. I want it to play more like a classic Capcom 2d fighter fighter ala Darkstalkers. I'm currently refer to the project as Animal RED/ Teroar for the moment until I find a better name. The roster currently consist of a Fox,Lion, wolf, tiger, snake characters. I posted a short video below showing my progress. This is just in the idea phase I just want to gauge interest. Please feel free to ask questions both negative and positive are welcome, I'm open to ideas, help etc. I'd like to build a team for this so if anyone has expertise in sprite work, storyboard, art direction, game design, coding, sound just let me know if you wanna help. Unfortunately this is a non profit project I do on my free time, if it's any good I may start a kickstarter. Thank you for your time.

Nidhogg

Nidhogg is FINALLY slated for release this year. I'm really excited about it, even-though I've never had a chance to play it myself, and I was wondering what the opinions are on this game from those who have played it and have a competitive nature.

I've always been attracted to the psychological game in fighting games (never started playing myself though) and when Nidhogg releases I plan to sink a lot of time in it and become really good at, so my questions to you are how big is the psychological aspect of this game? What are the chances this will become a competitive fighting game with a decent player-base? Do you think it will be main-stage at EVO 2014. And most of all, please tell me anything interesting about this game from your experience playing it!

App for fighting games

Hello all,
This is something that I have been thinking about for a while. What do you guys think of an android app- and possibly an iPhone one- for fighting games with most known fighting games with their tech and all knowledge that is discovered so far. Basically, a huge tutorial app with information on set-ups mix-ups and all these different stuff to make people good at the game. The app will be sort of a table view(initial idea) where you choose the game and the character to get to all the knowledge on how to play the character. I'm not sure how to properly convey this information. What do you guys think, is it going to be great linking guides and videos as well as notations for combos or design the app in a way that has its own way of displaying this information which will require me to do the combos and everything myself instead of using the internet. How would you like an app that is for learning fighting games? What kind of way do you want the information to be displayed?
Thank you.

Why *how* you practice affects how good you'll get (from HatchetJob podcast)

The latest episode of the HatchetJob podcast (a generally good gaming podcast btw) is an interview with Dr. Tom Stafford, and the topic is about practice in games vs. overall adeptness.

It's a fascinating interview and, obviously, relevant for fighting games. He discusses the benefits of practice over time, but also things like the importance of taking breaks and how that *improves* practice.

I'm looking for fighting game shirts but only know of the more known companies, such as BrokenTier, Kineda and the like. There is one shirt in particular I am looking for. It's of MvC2 Dr. Doom shooting his laser with the word "PEW" in place of the laser. I can't for the life of me find it but I got the link from a stream within the past month.

Also, I'll update this thread with as many shirt companies links as possible.

I've created a site for people who want to organize offline and online tournaments. It's still in its beta phase but it's useable in its current form. Hopefully I'll update the site in a month or so.

Feel free to post feedback on how I should improve the site.

Looks pretty solid, if someone wants to give it a try...

Harada's next IP should be a fighting manga (baki, garouden, tenjou, tough) based 3d fighter. It's time!

I have said that on here before but in random threads, never in an fgd thread to try to garner some attention to it, but seeing the J-Stars Victory Vs game getting mad love, and those shonen mangas in general getting mad love, and the only martial arts based manga to really get any love (fighting game related) the past almost a decade or more was, hokuto no ken. yeah there is a ps2 garouden game, but its not refined, import only to my knowledge, and far from a great unknown fighter. there has never been a fighting game based on tough, grappler baki, tenjo tenge, historys strongest, etc..., and i think its time.

not only is it time, but harada is the man to revolutionized such a 3d fighter. he would take it to the next level. that nice blend between tekken, and those shitty mma fighters that come out. now we have recognized characters from grappler baki in games though, and those two are listed below.

GAI TENDO from king of fighters 11
he is a clear representation of baki. even his front flip kick that was yujiros famous finish him move in the early part of the series, that baki eventually learned, is put into his movelist.
Spoiler:
gai-2000striker.jpg

FENG WEI from tekken 5,6,ttt2.
some of us who followed the grappler baki manga already long since saw this resemblence years ago, but it did make waves a few years ago when people finally noticed feng wei was basically retsu kaioh from grappler baki. characters similar to retsu kaioh are also gato from the kof and garou mark of the wolves series. yes a pony tailed chinese martial artist isnt exactly the newest thing ever, but id like to think someone is keeping up with their fighting manga, and are modeling after retsu kaioh, because it seems pretty obvious. especially one of gato's supers is what retsu kaioh did to katsumi in a fight.
Spoiler:

TAKUMA from the kof series
im adding this because i think his kof 13 design is orochi doppo to the T. i know the character is originally most likely based off of mas oyama, like shozan and doppo, but the character redesign just screams someone saw one of those two in the manga and were like, he needs to look like this.

this is kof 13 takuma
Spoiler:
TakumaWinXIII.png

orochi doppo
Spoiler:
doppo.jpg
someone had a little fun in mugen and made doppo a fighter using the kof 13 takuma sprite, and even when it comes to playstyle, i think takuma is more like doppo then shozan

id rather see this 3d then 2d, and i know harada is the only one who can properly give these manga franchises justice in a fighting game. harada if you can read this, please make it happen. to be able to play yujiro hanma, jack hanma, baki hanma, Shozan Matsuo, kagiroi tetsuhito (tenjou tenge) etc.. in a game made by you would just bring a tear to my eye. almost every childhood manga that was popular has had its time of day, even hnk, a game i would have never saw coming from a million miles away. for us fighting manga fans we have seen so very little love when it comes to fighting games, and its shocking. bring us what i need, what we all need, what the fighting game world needs, a revolutionary new 3d fighter by you, katsuhiro harada, based on some of the greatest fighting manga characters to ever be created.

id really love to see harada be the one to give me my last dream fighting game, and even show these scrubs how to do a proper mma fighting game. i could imagine it being a bit tekken based in its mechanics and what not, but with universal grappling options and other much more detailed fighting tactics. also no launchers or anything like that where you are juggling mofos. just nice "ground" based combat (well you can have jumps and shit, but no launchers to 15 hit combos and stuff).

what do you guys think? do you just want another tekken in 2-3 years, tvsf, or some super new shit from harada?

FGC Money - thread needs moved

I was wanting to do a paper on the financial aspect of competitive FGs. More specifically, the circulation of money in and around the FGC.

Basically, I'm looking for any and all sources of tournament prizes/winners, betting, the costs of running tournaments & streaming, traveling & rooming costs, entry fees, all of that.

Would appreciate any help or direction.

Edit - could have sworn I was posting this in General Discussion. Y

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3.

I didn't see a thread for this, so here it is.

I know the majority of the world probably doesn't take Naruto seriously, nonetheless the franchise's games, but please for the sake of relevance, don't bring any of that "Naruto is for kiddies" bullshit in here. If you want to troll then go somewhere else.

Anyway, I'm making this thread as a general discussion hub for the Ninja Storm games (Ninja Storm 2, 3, Generations, ect.) There doesn't seem to be much of a community around this game hence it doesn't really tread into the competitive scene, but I know I'm not the only one who enjoys these games and has questions regarding it.

To start us off:

Storm 3 Trailers:

It looks like they're bringing back the AWESOME story mode fights in this one like Storm 2 had. I was really disappointed when I hopped onto Generations for the first time only to see that the story mode was just a bunch of fights with different people. The nine-tails battle at the beggining looks fucking nuts. Also makes me wonder if they're gonna start putting in giant characters, or if he'll be playable at all. Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to play as Nine Tails and face off against Gaara's sand demon?

In terms of an actual tier list, this is the closest thing I could find that seemed accurate. Don't bitch just because it's on gamefaqs, because it's all I could really find. If anyone knows where a better list is hosted then please let me know and I'll update the post.

Discussion on health changes, ring outs, Awakenings, ect.
Off screen Nine-Tails boss battle (Looks fucking awesome, check it out)

Will update post with more info if anything else important comes up. Might post some character data if the thread gets enough attention. I don't wanna look up all that information if no one's gonna use it.

This was a great game in my childhood, and I was pretty damn good at it. It sucks that I could never find anyone who played it competitively. Has anyone ever found it in the arcades and/or went to tournaments for it?

New Mechanics and Mechanics You'd Like to See More.

$

I wanna see what mechanic ideas you guys have and what pre-exsisting mechanics you wanna see more in newer fighting games.

For me, I don't have any ideas for new ones, but I'd like to see 4 more commonly:

-EWGF. For those that don't know, this is an enhanced version of Kazuya's Rising Uppercut that can be performed by pressing the corresponding punch button at the exact same frame that you tap the last directional input at. I'd like to see it as a universal ability in a game; pressing the last directional input and corresponding button at the same frame for a better version. What I like about this is that it rewards high level (I mean non-beginner level by this) execution with useful properties, such as more pushback on block, damage and juggle properties. Whether it is for all special moves of a character or limited to one move per character, either way, it'd certainly be interesting.

-Feint cancelling from Garou. There's no need for this to be for feints; it can be for taunts. However, I think that the feint/taunt animation should be only cancellable during middle/later frames so that the frame advantage is not huge.

-Taunt stat bonuses. If you don't have a post-knockdown setup, you opponent is knocked very far away or you have nothing to do from far away, you can still do something fruitful by using taunts.

-Combo Breakers & Counter Breakers. Someone said something similar to this but I don't recall who (someone who's working on KI): Combo Breakers and Counter Breakers extend the mind games into the combo.

I wasn't sure if this *exactly* qualifies as FG Discussion material, but in my day job as a journalist, I wrote an article about the Metro Detroit FGC. Certainly it's not on the scale of the coasts, but it was definitely a fun read, and I think folks on SRK would appreciate it!
It can be found at The World Warriors.

Mechanics and the Games that Spawned them

Something I've been wondering about for awhile now. Where exactly did certain staple FG mechanics make their debut? As in, what was the first FG with air-dashes, flight modes, parry-like moves, etc. More importantly, which ones were from games that are barely remembered now but without which the genre wouldn't be what is is today?

ARC SYSTEM WORKSxCAPCOM?

Ok, so i have a guy to tell me that he thinks that there should be a game like Guilty GearxStreet Fighter, of course i was like "NO, WHY??" and he replied, well since they made a capcom vs snk game and it worked out pretty well, (he loves capcom vs snk2 and how they made the capcom characters work with the snk mechanics a bit.) and marvel vs capcom title lasted a pretty long time, people are still playing it. Then he began talking about it story wise saying that if ryu could take down the hulk, he should be able to handle sol badguy or potemkin. this kid knows his game history and has even competed at EVO a few times. Personally i think hes crazy, arc sys wrks charcters are too strong and even in game they would be to much for street fighter charcters to handle. Maybe if the alter the mechanics a bit for street fighter but that would mean that the street fighter characters themselves would have to do with alot of changing. i think hes crazy but what do you think?
